Rotaract Meeting Minutes - March 12, 2012

  2. Speaker #1: Chris, pastor of outreach at the Mustardseed
    • the Mustardseed started in 1925
    • he has been volunteering there for many years
    • started a youth program at the Mustardseed
    • the Mustardseed has a food bank, clothing bank, outreach program and a farm
    • Food bank has recently started a family oriented meals program
    • the weekend meals are a lot of fun to help out with
    • the main focus is to build a sense of community
    • Rotaract could possibly do the Hot Dog Night (March 30th)
  3. Speaker #2: Michelle promoting the Subha Gill fundraiser
    • Subha Gill was diagnosed with bone canccer
    • 20 years old, formally a UVic student
    • 1st round of chemo was unsuccessful
    • Just started 2nd round of chemo
    • Check out the Facebook page for the event being held at Touch Lounge
    • Michelle is helping organize a hockey fundraiser over Easter weekend at the Island Centre of Excellence
      • will contain a 24 hour treadmill relay and a 3 on 3 hockey tournament

    • Last week: Bryce, Melissa, Kerstin
    • This week: Clair, Leanne, Julia
  2. Rotaract Running Club
    • Do not forget to sign up for the Times Columnist 10K taking place on April 29th - we need 10 people to have registered by March 23rd
    • Registration for the TC10K is $40
    • weekly run: meet in front of Library @ 10:30 on Sundays.
  3. Financial Literacy Night
    • have confirmed 1 speaker, still looking for 2 more
    • will make a large poster to advertise (sign-up sheet was passed around)
  4. PETS recap will happen next meeting - make sure you come! Dylan and Sam have a lot to share. 
    • they were told that we are the most successful club on the entire North American western coastline!! Very exciting!

    • Laser Tag: great turnout, almost 30 Rotaractors, Interactors and friends
    • Esquimalt Interact: Sarah and Louise went to their last meeting. 
    • Bake sale: raised $210

    • project they are doing is 1,000 x 5

    5. Water.org
    • postponing run to Sept. 15, 2012
    • will have all summer to plan event
    • will be selling Bunny Cards and chocolate this spring as a fundraiser
    • need to sell 200 tickets for Upstairs on March 23rd. A Shot of Bourbon will be an awesome event. Start spreading the word.
    6. District Training Leadership Conference
    • Harbourside Rotary has asked us to help out on the weekend of March 31st
    • We will be helping to promote the District Conference here
    7. Financial Literacy Night
    • March 27th at 7:00 p.m. in Vertigo
    • Will make a large poster next week
    • seminar will cover:
          • credit scores
          • taxes
          • insurance

    Attendance: 13 members
    1. Membership Coffee Update:
      • This week: Eric, Tess, Sarah
      • Next week: Samantha, Jasmin, Dylan
    2. Cool Aid Society Donation (7:10 pm):
      • Touch Fundraiser took in $600 Total
      • Vote for Donation Direction: Subsidized Housing(4), Shelter(1), Health Care(8)
      • Cheque to be direct towards Health Care
    3. water.org Committee Update (7:12 pm):
      • Upcoming nightclub event - March 23rd at Upstairs - "A Shot of Bourbon", Mardi Gras Theme
      • Will set a goal for ticket sales
      • Run - Rockstar and Starbucks to sponsor, Alumni Chip Trail rather than Ring Road
    4. Club Services Committee Update (7:20 pm):
      • Oak Bay "Club in a Pub", 5:00-6:00 pm Thursday, February 23rd at the Pennyfarthing Pub
      • Social Event - Friday, March 2, 7:00 pm, Downtown laser tag, View Street - $12/person with minimum 12 people, dinner to follow (options are open)
    5. Literacy Round Table (7:28 pm):
      • Proposed Project: Financial Literacy Seminar
        • Experienced club members, Rotarians, community members to speak
        • Open to anyone
        • Admission, coffee/tea by donation
        • Theme: "5 things you didn't know about..."
    6. District Conference Committee Update (7:35 pm):
      • We will have a Rotaract Booth and an individual Rotaract Victoria Booth
      • Invitations will be ready by next week
      • Members to collect SWAG for Rotaract welcome packages
